Dentists in Jersey, Channel Islands: costs, children's care and Pension Plus

There is no NHS dentistry in Jersey: adults pay privately, and most families spread the cost with a practice's monthly membership plan. Children are treated free at the hospital's Community Dental Service until they finish primary school, and can then join the Jersey Dental Scheme.

How dentistry works in Jersey

There is no NHS dentistry in Jersey and never has been. Adults pay for all dental care, there is no equivalent of the English Band 1, 2, 3 system, and the health card does not cover routine dental treatment. Every practice is a private business and sets its own prices.

The States pays for some care in three cases: children up to the end of primary school, through the hospital's Community Dental Service; older children in full-time education, who can join the Jersey Dental Scheme; and pensioners on lower incomes, through Pension Plus. People on Income Support can also get help with essential treatment. Each is explained below.

What it costs

Prices are set by each practice and are broadly in line with private dentistry in the south of England. Typical ranges:

Treatment Typical Jersey price
New patient examination £60 to £120†
Routine check-up £45 to £90†
Hygienist, 30 minutes £70 to £120†
Small X-rays £10 to £25 each†
White filling £90 to £300†
Emergency appointment £80 to £150†

Membership plans

Most practices on the island offer a monthly membership plan, and for most families it is the sensible way to pay. A plan turns routine care into a fixed monthly fee, usually covering one or two examinations and two hygiene visits a year, often with a discount on treatment and some emergency cover. The better plans also give members priority when booking hygiene appointments. Dental insurance is available through the usual providers and some employers include it.

  • Two hygiene visits a year

Each practice below describes its own plan.

Our top five dental practices

If you want the most complete care, these are the five practices we would look at first. The order is our own, and every practice on this page is on the Government's list of dentists for Pension Plus.

1. Confidence Dental & Wellbeing, St Helier

A private practice at Castle Quay on the St Helier waterfront, a few minutes' walk from the Esplanade offices. It covers check-ups and hygiene, whitening and bonding, clear aligner orthodontics and implants, with digital scanning instead of impressions and a prevention-first, minimally invasive approach. The Government chose it by tender in 2022 to treat children from the hospital's waiting list, and again in 2024, with Leodis Dental Practice, to provide braces for some children waiting for orthodontic treatment. Its membership, the Healthy Mouth Plan, covers a yearly examination, X-rays when needed and two hygiene visits a year, with 10 per cent off most other treatment and children under 12 included free when a parent joins.

Children's dentistry: what the States pays for

Up to the end of primary school (Year 6, about age 11), children can be treated free at the Community Dental Service, the hospital's dental department on Newgate Street in St Helier. You refer your child yourself: call 01534 445300 or email dental@health.gov.je. Waits have been long. In August 2026, 203 children had waited more than a year, and the health department's target is to clear those waits by the end of 2026. If your child is in pain, call the same number and a dentist will triage.

From secondary school until the end of full-time education, children move to a private dentist, and the Jersey Dental Scheme (officially the Jersey Dental Fitness Scheme) helps with the cost. Your child joins at a participating dentist for a monthly fee that the dentist sets. It covers routine care such as examinations, scale and polish, X-rays, routine fillings and extractions, but not braces, crowns, root fillings or dentures. If your family income is below £67,622 and you have lived in Jersey for at least five years, the scheme also contributes to the treatment needed to make your child dentally fit before joining. Register by the end of December in the year your child leaves primary school to get that help. Most dentists take part.

Braces for children and young people in full-time education are provided at the hospital, if your dentist refers your child and they meet the treatment criteria. Waits have been long, and in 2024 the Government paid private practices, chosen by tender, to treat some children on the list.

The hospital's dental department also provides special care dentistry, by referral. Families on Income Support can apply for help with essential treatment for anyone on the claim, including children.

Private practices often charge less for children, too, and some include children free when a parent joins their membership plan.

Pension Plus: help for pensioners

Pension Plus is a Government of Jersey scheme that helps pensioners on lower incomes with dental, optical and chiropody costs. You qualify if you have reached pension age (65 to 67, depending on when you were born), get a Social Security pension or have Entitled status, you and your partner pay no Jersey income tax or no more than £1,000 a year between you, and your capital is under £64,000, not counting your home. The £1,000 tax rule was added in 2026.

For dental care it pays up to £55 a year towards a check-up and up to £1,900 every four years towards treatment or dentures†. That covers examinations, hygiene, fillings, root canals, implants, bridges, crowns, extractions, gum treatment, dentures and repairs, X-rays, mouth guards and sedation, but not cosmetic treatment such as whitening or veneers. It also pays up to £55 every two years towards an eye test, up to £165 every two years towards glasses or contact lenses, and up to £165 a year towards chiropody.

Apply online at gov.je and wait for your confirmation letter before you book, because treatment before then cannot be claimed. Choose a dentist on the scheme's list. The dentist invoices the scheme directly, so you only pay anything above your allowance. Members also get lower GP fees through the Health Access Scheme.

Help if you are on Income Support

Income Support can pay for essential dental treatment through a special payment: a grant of up to £795 for anyone on the claim who has not had help in the last two years, with any balance as a loan. Apply before treatment starts. For an emergency extraction or basic filling, see your dentist and claim within seven days. Cosmetic work, implants and braces are not covered. People aged 65 or over use Pension Plus first, and Income Support can make up the difference.

Dental emergencies

There is no island-wide out-of-hours dentist. In opening hours, call your own practice: most keep emergency slots. Out of hours, practices make their own arrangements for registered patients, often a phone line for a fee. For an accident or a facial injury, go to the Emergency Department at the General Hospital, which is open 24 hours. A child up to Year 6 who is in pain can be triaged by the Community Dental Service on 01534 445300 in its opening hours. It is the best reason to register with a practice before you need one.

How to register

  1. Choose a practice. Location matters less than you think on an island this size, but parking in St Helier does not, so check.
  2. Ring or book online for a new patient examination. Most practices will see new patients within a couple of weeks.
  3. Bring a list of medications, details of any ongoing treatment and, if you can, your last X-rays from your UK dentist. A quick email to your old practice before you leave saves repeating radiographs.
  4. Join a membership plan if you want predictable costs and easier hygiene bookings.
  5. If you are mid-way through orthodontics or implant treatment, arrange a handover before you move. Not every practice offers both.
  6. For a child up to Year 6, refer them to the Community Dental Service as soon as you arrive, because of the waiting list, or register them with your own practice. For an older child, ask your dentist about the Jersey Dental Scheme.

Frequently asked questions

Is there NHS dentistry in Jersey?

No. All adult dentistry in Jersey is private. Children up to the end of primary school can be treated free at the hospital's Community Dental Service, older children in full-time education can join the Jersey Dental Scheme, and pensioners on lower incomes can get help through Pension Plus.

How much does a dentist cost in Jersey?

Each practice sets its own prices, broadly in line with private dentistry in the south of England. In the 2026 price lists we checked, a routine examination was £45 and a hygiene visit for existing patients £78. Most practices offer a monthly membership plan that covers examinations and hygiene visits for a fixed fee.

Do children get free dental care in Jersey?

Yes, until the end of primary school. The hospital's Community Dental Service treats children up to Year 6 free; you refer your child yourself on 01534 445300, and waits can be long. After that, children see a private dentist, and the Jersey Dental Scheme helps with the cost until the end of full-time education.
